Located in one of the most remote and pristine regions of the Southern Pantanal, along the banks of the crystal-clear Rio Negro, Fazenda Barranco Alto is more than just a luxury lodge, it is a living sanctuary of biodiversity and one of Brazil’s premier scientific research hubs.

Below you can see the itinerary of the 4 days Pantanal Safari Barranco Alto Lodge. The schedule of the activities we are showing below is just an example of how the distribution of the tours can be.

Day 01: Transfer by airplane or by 4×4 pickup truck from Campo Grande to Pantanal

Pick up at the airport or bus station or hotel in Campo Grande and transfer to the Pantanal of Aquidauna. In the Pantanal Safari Barranco Alto, you have the option to go to the lodge with a 4×4 pickup truck or in airplane departing from Campo Grande city or Aquidauana city.

The land transport itself is already a beautiful trip and an adventure, where on the way you will pass through the Serra de Maracaju (maracaju hills), through the fields, forest and greeslands of the Pantanal. Depending of the season of year the trip will last from 06 up to 08 hours. When the Pantanal is very flooded the terrestrial access is interrupted, being possible get in the Pantanal Lodge only by airplane.

The air transport is a spectacle to the part, because the flight is panoramic and allows you to contemplate the landscapes of the plateau (Pantanal´s border) and the Pantanal flat area; for sure, it is an unforgettable experience. It is possible to choose the direct flight from Campo Grande (1h06 of duration) or from Aquidauana town (2 hours by car + 36 minutes by plane). Air transportation is available all year-round.

Check-in at the Barranco Alto Lodge can be for lunch or after lunch; it all depends on the departure time of Campo Grande and the type of transportation used to get there. The departure time will also determine if will be possible to perform some activity on the arrival day or not.

The distribution of the activities day-by-day is made directly on the Lodge with your local guide. The schedule of the activities we are showing below is just an example of how the distribution of the tours can be.

Is be possible to go out for an ecological walk of recognition of the Lodge area. This tour can last from one to two hours depending of the weather conditions and willingness of participants. The trek happen on a trail of 2km up to 3km that passes through the middle of the closed forest and the open field where it will be possible to observe several species of birds / wild animals and have a more intimate contact with nature.

Day 02: Day safari in the Pantanal with local guide – Breakfast, lunch and dinner

The nature tours usually happen early in the morning or late in the afternoon, as these are the periods with the highest chances of observing wildlife, because the cooler hours favor the movement of birds and animals.

After breakfast, departure for the Horseback Ride – if you want it is possible to accompany the preparation of the horses for the ride, that is, to put the pantaneiro harness very comfortable and that can be use by people of any age. The horses are from pantanal (raised in the Pantanal), docile and well trained for the realization tours, which favors who does not have or has little experience with horses. The ride lasts 2 to 3 hours in trails that pass through the “capões” (higher forest areas), open fields and bays, making it possible to observe Pantanal wildlife, like deer, coati, peccary, giant anteater and various bird´s species.

Between one activity and another, take time to rest in the hammocks, stay in the pool, read a book or even make a list of what did you see during the tours. Before each activity in the afternoon, there is a snack with juices, breads, cakes and regional fruits.

In the afternoon, departure for a motor boat tour on the Rio Negro – this tour happen in aluminum boat equipped with seats and outboard motor used to go up the river stream searching for the wildlife that lives in or around the river such as capybaras, giant otters, alligators, howler monkey and a plenty of birds. Depending the season it is possible to cool off (swim) in the waters of the Rio Negro. When done in the afternoon there is a stop for the contemplation of the sunset. This tour is recommend for people of any age and has an average length of 02 to 03 hours. It is an excellent tour to photograph wildlife in Pantanal.

Day 03: Day safari in the Pantanal with local guide – Breakfast, lunch and dinner

After breakfast, departure for the Paddling Canoe tour – Canoe will be use to go down the river, which requires almost no effort. Driving the canoe is easy, requires no previous practice, and can be perform by people of any age. This activity brings you closer to nature through silence and contemplation. In general it is approximately 2 hours contemplating the river to the point where the small truck will be waiting to bring you back to the Pousada (another 20 minutes by car).It´s a very good tour to spot wildlife, such as giant otters, herons, egrets, capybaras, caiman and with luck you also can spot the Jaguar.

After have lunch and relax, in the afternoon departure for Safari Photographic and animal focus – 4×4 adapted jeep (equipped with seats) is used for the realization of safaris in Pantanal wetland. The tour ride through several environments of the wetland where it is possible to cover a larger area, increasing the chances of observing the wildlife. It is also possible to make a stop to walk a little, stretch your legs, and of course, look for the animals. Usually this tour happens in the afternoon and it extends to the beginning of the night, when a powerful torch will be use to search for animals with nocturnal habits (animal focus). Good chances to see deer, wolf, tapir, anteater and as always several species of birds. The ride takes around 3 to 4 hours and people of any age can participate of this activity.

Day 04: Transfer from Pantanal to Campo Grande
After breakfast you go for an Ecological Walk – usually this walk is longer than the first, varying from 2 to 3 hours, traversing trails from 3km to 5km in other parts of the farm. As always, the purpose of the tour is to search for the wildlife existing in the Pantanal, but the local guide will also explain a little about the vegetation and trees of the place, if any has medicinal effect, etc.

After lunch, transfer from Pantanal to Campo Grande (hotel or airport). (B,L)

Important Notes

• The tours will be schedule day by day at the Pousada depending of the weather conditions and can be change. Our program day by day is only an example of how the excursion can be distribute.

Notes about the TRNSPORT BY LAND

• Campo Grande to Pantanal leaving maximum at 11:00am. The trip takes between 05 to 08 hours depending of the weather and season of Pantanal;
• From Campo Grande to Barranco Alto will be 270 kilometers (140km paved road + 130km land road and trails in Pantanal);
• Usually from Dezembro to April is not possible get at Barranco Alto Lodge by land because the Pantanal can be flooded. Please, request if it kind of transport will available for the period you want to come.
• Bring snacks, cereal bars and fruit and water because during the Pantanal road there is not places buy things
• Is possible do the transfer by land from Campo Grande x Aquidauana x Campo Grande all year round!
