Placed on the shores of Drain of Castelo (vazante do Castelo), the Fazenda was founded in 1940 by José Coelho Lima and his wife Cyra Gomes Coelho Lima. The couple inherited a small piece of land where they lived and worked with cattle. As the years passed by they bought new areas and formed Baía das Pedras, on 15 thousand hectares. The two fresh water lakes with gravel rocks and sand in the bottle, located at the Fazenda, inspired the name “Bay of Rocks” or just Baía das Pedras.

The Main House was built in 1960, because of their older son’s wedding. Parties were something common at Baía das Pedras and because of that the place is well known by the local inhabitants. They celebrate the founder’s birthday José Coelho Lima in September and they also have a religious celebration of the Divine Lord 40 days after Easter. The good hospitality is still a tradition at the Fazenda; The host’s couple, Doio and Rita Coelho Lima, are now the responsible for the farm. Besides the Hotel Fazenda they also raise cattle and Pantaneiro horses.

Refurbished in 2003, respecting the original style and the cozy environment of the family’s hause, the main house of Baia das Pedras hosts up to 13 guests per time. There are 05 private room all with airconditioning, ceiling fan and private bathroom. There are 03 triple room (single bed that can be changed to a couple bed if desired) and 02 double room.

A hammock lounge, baconies, dinning room and TV are part of the family’s house area and the meals are prepared in a tradition wood buring oven. The meals served at the Farm are typical of the region with the recipes representing the delight and taste of the local gastronomy. The carreteiro rice, the garibel, the pantaneiro barbecue, the paçoca de pilão, the strew, the rabada and other delicious meals are part of the Baía das Pedras menu.

When you get at Baía das Pedras Hotel Fazenda, you’ll be in the heart of the Pantanal where the sky and the nature sounds are already a great attraction. For you get close to the natural life and culture of the place some activities will be offered during your stay in the Farm. During the activities you have chance of spotting animals like the marsh and pampas deer, the capybara, caimans, howler monkey, the tapir, peccaries, toucans, jabiru stork, the hyacinth macaw, yellow and red macaws and a hundred other birds.  Even the puma can be seen with luck!

As the Baia das Pedras Lodge receive only 13 people at the same time, the service is very customized the tour groups are very small and usually you can chose which activity you want to do. The farm offer horseback ride in Pantaneiro’s horse, canoeing at the fresh water lakes, trekking in the opeen fild and forest, spotlight in truck with seats, truck photografic safari and piranha fishing.

In side of the Baia das Pedras Ranch (15.000 hectares) it’s been developed the Pantanal Giant Armadillo Project. This project aims to establish the first long-term ecological study of giant armadillos as well as other species of Xenarthra in the Brazilian Pantanal and to use these species as ambassadors for biodiversity conservation through education, outreach initiatives, and media campaigns. It’s possible visit Baia da Pedras and also participate of the research when the researchers are in the farm.
